Zodiak is proud to welcome the new work of Deborah Hay to Finland. Hay is a legend of American postmodern dance who remains at the vanguard of innovative work in dance, choreography, performance and dance education. The Forsythe Company and world-renowned choreographer William Forsythe have commissioned a new work by Hay, performed by a cast of five talented dancer-choreographers – including Finnish Vera Nevanlinna. Co-producers also include Zodiak – Center for New Dance (Helsinki), Howard Gilman Foundation (New York) and Maggie Allesee Center for Choreography (Florida). Additional support is provided by the Baryshnikov Dance Foundation. The choreography of If I Sing to You is a song without words or music. It holds together through innumerable tender, witty, dark, volatile, theatrical and absurdly human moments choreographed and directed by Deborah Hay. It is performed by an outrageously gifted cast of 5 highly trained dancer/choreographers. All 5 women have the option to perform in a male or female costume. They will decide, (individually and without prior consultations with either the choreographer or the other dancers) which costume to wear for every performance, thus multiplying the dynamic of the choreography through ever changing patterns, contexts, and combinations. If I Sing to You wil be premiered at Festspielhaus Hellerau in Dresden on 3.4.2008. The work will be seen in Finland at Kiasma-Theatre 10.-11.4., directly after the world premiere. Deborah Hay (b. 1941) is a dancer, teacher, writer, director, and choreographer who works with experienced dancers/choreographers. Hay was one the founding members of the Judson Dance Theatre in New York, and is acknowledged by critics and historians as one of the most relevant and influential representatives of experimental dance today. Since the mid-nineties Deborah Hay has focused almost exclusively on the choreography of solo dances, performing them around the world and passing them on to notable performers such as Mikhail Baryshnikov. In 2004 she received a prestigious Bessie Award for her quartet The Match. Her writings include 3 books: My Body, the Buddhist, 2000, Wesleyan University Press, Lamb at the Altar: The Story of a Dance, 1994, Duke University Press, and Moving Through the Universe in Bare Feet, 1976, Swallow Press.
"There are aspects of dance
performance that I had always accepted as a given. Working with Deborah
Hay has deepened my understanding of what we do as dancers. She has
helped bring a greater vitality to the stage."
"A master performer sensitive to the slightest shift of imagery
and tone, Deborah Hay has continued in the postmodern tradition of the
Judson Dance Theater, which she helped to found, for more than four
decades now."
"It's a simple act made glorious by a consuming dance intelligence."
