If I Sing to You * April 10-11 The Finnish dance scene takes yet another quantum leap towards new international networking as a world-class co-operation comes to Helsinki. The new creation If I Sing to You by Deborah Hay will be seen at Kiasma-theatre directly after its world premiere. The work is commissioned by the world-famous choreographer William Forsythe and The Forsythe Company in Germany. Co-producers include Zodiak – Center for New Dance. The cast of the performance includes Finnish dancer-choreographer Vera Nevanlinna. If I Sing to You premieres at Festspielhaus Hellerau in Dresden 3.4.2008. The work will be seen in Finland directly after the world premiere at Kiasma theatre. After Helsinki, the work will be seen at several international festivals and venues, including Amsterdam, Paris and Berlin. Deborah Hay is on amerikkalaisen postmodernin tanssin kiistaton legenda ja uranuurtaja, joka jatkaa yhä innovatiivisuuden eturintamassa. The Forsythe Company on tilannut Haylta uuden teoksen, johon on kutsuttu esiintymään viisi huippulahjakasta tanssija-koreografia. Teoksen tuotantotahoina ovat Forsythe Companyn lisäksi Zodiak – Uuden tanssin keskus, Howard Gilman Foundation (New York) ja Maggie Allesee Center for Choreography (Florida). Teoksen valmistumista tukee Baryshnikov Dance Foundation. If I Sing to You is a dance that is also a song, music, poetry, and voice. It holds together through innumerable tender, witty, dark, volatile, theatrical and absurdly human moments choreographed and directed by Deborah Hay. It is performed by an outrageously gifted cast of 5 highly trained dancer/choreographers. All 5 women have the option to perform in a male or female costume. They will decide, (individually and without prior consultations with either the choreographer or the other dancers) which costume to wear for every performance, thus multiplying the dynamic of the choreography through ever changing patterns, contexts, and combinations. Helsinki performances are in co-operation with Kiasma-theatre.
