Australian choreographer and teacher Philip Channells leads Beyond Technique – searching for authenticity, a five-day disability-inclusive dance masterclass with a public outcome in Zodiak.

Philip Channells is Australia’s leading expert in disability-inclusive dance practice. He is the Creative Director of Dance Integrated Australia and is an Ambassador for Bundanon Trust’s Artist in Residence Program. Throughout this course he focuses on inclusive dance practice for volunteer, emerging and professional artists with and without disability.

BEYOND TECHNIQUE – SEARCHING FOR AUTHENTICITY

Class description:
Channells will use his work 'Beyond Technique - searching for authenticity' to challenge and inspire dancers to look for a new and authentic quality of movement from their own life experience. He uses contemporary dance and improvisation techniques in daily workshops to inform the beginnings of creating new movement and dramaturgical material.

Professional Development Opportunity:
There are several volunteer positions available for the following roles:

  • Choreographic / Workshop Assistant (Professional & Emerging Dancers)
  • Workshop Assistant (Artist with Disability).

This 5-day process-led intensive is designed in 3 parts:
Part 1: Professional Development (days 1 & 2)

What: Deepen your understanding of working in an inclusive-dance environment and gain new skills in choreographic practice. This is a fast-paced course that introduces contemporary dance techniques and adaptability to highlight the function and purpose of movement while retaining authenticity in a self-devised creative process.

Who: Dance students, emerging and professional artists (choreographers, directors, dancers, physical performers), dance / theatre educators, teachers, disability sector staff and volunteers.

Part 2: Skills Development & Practice (days 3 & 4)

What: This is an action-packed course that introduces young people with disability to contemporary dance techniques. It is designed to provide a platform to put new knowledge into practice in an environment shared with people with and without disability.

Who: All of the above in Part 1 with additional high school and tertiary level students with and without disability. Everyone will have a distinct thirst for knowledge and experience.

Part 3: Studio Showing (day 5)

What: Based on the previous four days work, the final Masterclass will be dedicated to presentation – a final open studio showing of the work in progress.

Who: All of the above including invited personnel and audience

FEE: 120€

Enrollment by March 21st.

Last date for enrollments and withdrawals is seven days prior to the beginning. After this date, refunds for withdrawals are only possible in case of illness with doctor’s certificate required. PHILIP CHANNELLS, teacher

Philip Channells is the Creative Director of Dance Integrated Australia and is an Ambassador to Bundanon Trust’s Artist in Residence program. Enmeshed in his dance education at the Northern Rivers Conservatorium (1998), Centre for the Performing Arts & Adelaide College of the Arts (1999 – 2001) and the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (2003) has been a 16-year commitment to the development of disability-inclusive dance practice in Australia and abroad.

He’s worked throughout Australia and in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Spain, Greece, China, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea. Philip spent 10 years working with Adelaide’ Restless Dance Theatre where he was Artistic Director (2009 – 2012).

He was one of eight choreographers at the Australian Youth Dance Festival 2012 (Gosford) and has presented his work at the Australian Dance Theatre (Adelaide), Australian National Gallery (Canberra), Adelaide College of the Arts (Adelaide), Australia Week Celebrations (Port Moresby), Arts Activated Conference (Sydney), Bundanon Trust (NSW South Coast), Bangarra Theatre (Sydney), Byron Community Centre (NSW North Coast), the National Dance Forum (Melbourne), Dance Symposium NSW (Sydney), Dance Your Heart Out (Melbourne), Don’t DIS my ABILITY (Sydney), Global Dance and the Child International/World Dance Alliance Dance Summit (Taipei), Judith Wright Centre for Contemporary Arts (Brisbane), the King St Arts Centre (Perth) World Alliance for Arts Education Global Summit (Rovaneimi) and the Sydney Opera House.

He mentored Matt Shilcock through the JUMP program (2013) and works regularly with his Associate Artist, Jianna Georgiou. Philip is fiercely committed to developing the cultural landscape of dance through redefining an artistic practice that integrates people from diverse backgrounds.

  • Assist ZODIAC staff with meet and greet, registration process and rehearsal room set
  • Support the facilitator (Philip Channells) in the devising and rehearsal process dependent on his needs and process
  • Attendance at all briefings and debriefs
  • Assistants may be required to lead warm up if requested
  • Assistants may be required to lead smaller groups throughout the process
  • Assistants are required to attend all workshops, showing and the Q&A
  • The Beyond Technique and Dance Education / Integrated Workshop Series will be documented. We would like you to be involved in some of the vox pops that will be shot throughout the project
  • Provide 250 word biog (English) and a b&w headshot
  • Promote the showing and engage with social media
  • To be a leader and role model to all participants through modeling best practice and upholding ethics and equality

 


Professional Development role for Artist with disability
Volunteer
