Side Step 2018 | Conversations with Objects
Conversations with Objects is a discussion concept created by art historian Claudia Mattos and the Goethe-Institut Sao Paolo. Side Step presents a version of this concept in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Finnland.
In this open event participants are invited to take part in a discussion with an object. Departing from the premise that objects are social agents as much as humans are, the chosen object is the event’s “main character” that provokes discussion around something new, indeterminate and unknown.
Confronting the materiality of the object creates a favorable situation for questioning current discursive practices, particularly in the field of art and art history, and to examine closely the relationships we establish with things. The concept and the discussion emerging from it illustrate the value systems and the beliefs affecting both the discussing group and its surrounding cultures.
In the concept participants are equally free to share interpretations, insights, knowledge and beliefs on the object. The event will be facilitated by the director of Goethe-Institut Finnland, Isabel Hölzl.
