How are profitable bodies produced? How does the finance economy shape our experiences and actions? What kinds of bodily practices and mindscapes would opposing or changing the current system mean, require or produce? How is our experience of living as a member of a society connected to the global economy or the climate change?
Dance artist Akseli Aittomäki is fascinated by three social developments: 1. The one called financialisation that can be understood as evaluation and assessment of various phenomena according to the criteria of the finance economy; 2. Political involvement; in one sense as a crisis of parliamentary participation but also in the form of the horizons opened by political activism; 3. The economical and social pressures brought about by climate change.
In his Z-Free period Aittomäki explores possibilities for concrete, physical performance relating to his themes. The artistic perspective of his work is experiential in the sense that it explores the experience and meaning of participating in a society and the impact of political phenomena on concrete individual mindscapes.
Aittomäki is especially interested in how individuals position themselves between conformism and activism: we participate in the maintenance of the present system simply by living as part of it – yet we have opportunities to try to change the society. On the other hand he seeks to produce ‘data art’ or ‘information art’ where statistical, social and scientific knowledge are used as material for artistic work.
