Z-free: Jaakko Nieminen
Z-free is Zodiak's event concept where selected artists are given the opportunity to present their working methods, work on their ideas and engage the audience in the creative process.
In his Z-Free period, choreographer Jaakko Nieminen works on a new performance that focuses on family dynamics. In the artist's own words:
”The experience of family dynamics and relationships is a highly ambiguous manifold. In my new performance I want to explore our understanding of those dynamics with my workgroup. Our point of entry is the human mind's capacity for insight that opens windows for experience.
Physical reactions are also often called experiences – especially when exploring events and reactions relevant to one's own physical/organic existence. We also talk about body awareness and knowledge, and during the process we focus on bodily experiences evoked by family dynamics.
The experience of a family is simultaneously humane, highly personal, regulated by norms and closely linked to the use of power. Instead of external politics, the family is linked to the historical memory of the humankind in a very fascinating way.
Our objective is to create a rich and heterogeneous collection of psycho-physical concepts, modes of existing and models of thought. The performance reflects on the dynamics of a psychoanalytic framework – the family – and the lack of personality in the operations of the machine-like subconscious. In my performances, the relationship between the performer and the spectator is often based on an emptying of meaning. We want to give the audience an experience that escapes affectivity, merely existing without engaging in any kind of valuation instead. It exists, but it is not something."
Jaakko Nieminen is joined in his Z-Free period by dancers Jouni Majaniemi and Aino Voutilainen.
