Perform in Valtteri Raekallio's newest work!

The participants of the course perform in Valtteri Raekallio's new site-specific work called Neuromaani (The Neuromaniac), based on Jaakko Yli-Juonikas' 2012 novel of the same title, in autumn 2016. During the course a so-called personal movement script is created for each participant. Participants commit to perform in Neuromaani one night per week for seven weeks in Helsinki between 15 August and 1 October 2016.

People of different ages and background are wanted. No previous dance experience is required. Everyone is welcome – newcomers, experienced dancers, professionals and dance students. We create the motion material for each student starting from his or her physical starting points.

Our objective is to expand expressive potentials and make the body more sensitive through choreographic exercises and motion activities. We also focus on developing our own experience of the body and how we move. We use various improvisation exercises to create a ‘motion script’ for each participant that will also become part of the final performance.

The first part of the course is a weekend workshop arranged on 7 to 8 May 2016 in two groups. Group I practises on Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 2 pm in Zodiak's studio in Cable Factory. Group II rehearses on Saturday and Sunday from 3 pm to 6 pm.

The second part of the course is a 45-minute one-on-one session with the choreographer. The personal sessions take place on weekday nights during weeks 19 and 20 at Zodiak in Cable Factory. The one-on-one sessions are scheduled during the group work weekend.

The third part of the course takes place in the performance venue in downtown Helsinki in the beginning of August 2016. It consists of five evening rehearsals (after 5 pm) on weeks 31–33. The aim is to integrate each participant's motion script to the performance venue and make it part of the performance. The August schedule is worked out in more detail in May. The participants must be of age.

Neuromaani is a cross-disciplinary project based on the Jaakko Yli-Juonikas' award-winning 2012 novel of the same title. The immersive work, a combination of contemporary dance, theatre performance, radio play, live role play and art installation, is performed in an empty hospital building in August and September 2016.

The course is arranged in collaboration with Pohjoinen Liike.
