This workshop for dance professionals concentrates on the working methods of choreographer Deborah Hay, with a special focus on the structure and choreographic questions of her piece Figure a Sea, created for Cullberg Ballet. The classes center on Hay’s unique method of creating choreography and movement, based on the alert presence of the dancer. The workshop introduces Hay’s central working questions, and the participants get to learn fragments of the work Figure a Sea.

Vera Nevanlinna has worked with Deborah Hay regularly from 2007 onwards. Nevanlinna performs in Figure a Sea and has toured with the piece and Cullberg Ballet in the US and in Europe since autumn 2015. Nevanlinna is one of the few people who has permission to teach Hay’s method. She instructed workshops on the Figure a Sea practice in the universities of New Jersey, Los Angeles and San Francisco during Cullberg Ballet’s autumn 2016 tour.

Figure a Sea will be performed on the Main stage of the Finnish National Theatre on January 14 and 15, 2017.
