Dance, take notes, and discover new connections between words and movement in this Indulge the Movement -course led by Anne Naukkarinen.

In this Indulge the Movement -course, you will explore dance through lived experience and imagination: what you feel, desire and fantasize about through movement. Throughout the course, you will carry a notebook in which you write about your own experiences of dancing: sensations, insights, desires, secrets and concerns that open up linguistic-bodily worlds of dance. Writing is allowed to influence dance, and dance to influence writing.

Each class begins with a gentle warm-up that attunes you to dancing, to your embodied presence and to the shared space we create together. We work with set movement sequences and improvisation tasks that allow you to explore your own movement. We will dance both to music and in silence, and practise group exercises centred on collective dance and interaction.

You are encouraged to approach all exercises through your own abilities and interests. This course is perfect for anyone with a curiosity and desire to dance – no previous dance experience is required. You will discover new ways of listening to your body, strengthening your connection to yourself and enjoying dancing with others.

Please bring your own notebook and pen!

Anne Naukkarinen is a Helsinki-based choreographer and visual artist. Her artistic work explores intimate bodily experiences that position movement in relation to social and historical situations. Naukkarinen also seeks to connect these bodily experiences to broader movements, such as intergenerational memories, wind and landscape.

Her methods draw from dance, somatic practices and writing, including note-taking. She often collaborates across performance art, choreography and visual art, creating works in theatre and gallery settings as well as site-specific contexts.

Naukkarinen's works have been presented in venues including her grandmother's garden, a Danish home, Moving in November festival, Institut Finlandais, MDT Moderna Dansteatern, Titanik gallery, Mad House Helsinki, Kunsthalle Helsinki and Contemporary Art Space Kutomo, among others. Since 2019, she has actively been part of developing the house of live art Mad House Helsinki.

Naukkarinen graduated with an MA in Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts of Uniarts Helsinki in 2020 and with a BA in Dance from the Theatre Academy of Uniarts Helsinki in 2015. She also completed her studies at the Inter-University Centre for Dance (HZT) in Berlin in 2014.
