Zodiak has an international recidency guest in May: dancer, actress, and director Gaya de Medeiros.
Gaya works in residency at Zodiak for a week, concentrating on her project Boba da Corte.
Boba da Corte is a project born out of a desire to look at a generation of sons and daughters born to poor parents, but who rose socially to the middle class and allowed themselves the luxury of dreaming. Is it possible to think about class consciousness in a less boring way?
The humour is an attempt at healing and touching a sore spot; it is autofiction and a sociological portrait of a delusional middle class.
Gaya is a dancer, actress, and director. She has worked with several national and international artists in dance, theater, and cinema. She starred in Ary Zara's short film Um Caroço de Abacate (An Avocado Pit), which was shortlisted for the Oscars in 2023.
She has created five shows, Atlas da Boca (2021), BAqUE (2022), Pai para Jantar (2023), Cafezinho (2024), and Corre, bebé! (2025), which have toured more than 15 countries and 28 cities (Atlas de Boca visited Kiasma Theatre in 2024), with two of them making the list of Best of the Year in Portugal (2021 and 2023).
She also founded BRABA with the aim of promoting actions led by trans and non-binary people. Gaya's research focuses on the expansion of autobiographical narratives and the tension between the body, the word, and the audience.
