Zodiak Laboratory is Zodiak's residency concept. In November 2026, the ZodLab residency artist is Tuulia Soininen.
In the residency, I will begin the process of working on a new piece and continue my artistic research of recent years. I will examine intimacy, the trauma body and ethical ways of working in the context of contemporary dance from a queer feminist perspective. Choreographically, I will work with qualitative dimensions of movement, such as shaking, rhythm and friction. Nakedness acts as one potential choreographic element that opens up and deepens the fleshiness of the body.
The aim of the process is not to present individual experiences, but to explore bodily states and tensions that can carry personal and political meanings. The work lingers at the intersections of contemporary dance and feminist performance art.
A central part of the process is the development of ethical working methods. I will work with an intimacy coordinator and explore concrete methods related to consent, recognition of boundaries and bodily ‘tuning in’ and ‘tuning out’ practices as part of a choreographer’s work. In the residency I will work with intimacy coordinator Sara-Maria Heinonen.
Body Symphony (working title) is planned to premiere as a co-production with Pirkanmaa Dance Center in 2027.
